Chris Sutton responds to Steven Gerrard’s post-match comments

Rangers were forced to confront their darkest demons on Wednesday night as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

The visitors appeared to be in control of the game after Scott Arfield rifled in a stunning strike from long range in the first-half, but a late salvo from the hosts saw the title-chasing outfit slip to their second defeat since returning from the winter break.

With Celtic also extending their lead at the top of the SPFL following a crushing 5-0 win against Hearts on the same evening, fresh questions have been asked of Rangers’ mettle.

The pressure resting on the players’ shoulders has been intensified by the underlying fear of Celtic clinching 10 in a row, and Steven Gerrard admitted his side couldn’t handle it in the second half last night.

And, as you might expect, BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton was on hand to offer his thoughts on the Liverpool legend’s admission, providing three simple but damning words.

As Sutton alludes to in his verdict, that Gerrard has publicly outed his players as invertebrates is a statement that will send shockwaves through the SPFL.

Is Gerrard the right man for Rangers?

Regardless of the motivation for Gerrard’s comments – whether they’re designed to motivate his players or simply an admission of the truth – there’s no doubt his squad are crumbling at a defining period in the season.

It seems there is no way back for the Gers now that the Bhoys have opened up a 10-point gap at the top of the league.
