Rangers completely revamped their defence this summer, but Steven Gerrard can go one better by moving for Ashley Williams in 2019.

Gerrard’s defensive overhaul this summer has been extremely effective, but he could certainly do with another experienced centre back next season.

38 year-old Gareth McAuley is unlikely to play more than one season, and the boss will need an old head at the back to guide the likes of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.

Williams’ relationship with Everton fans has turned sour, but the 34 year-old always plays phenomenally for Wales, showing exactly the type of leadership that could take the Gers’ defensive core to the next level.

The Welsh captain was at his very best as Ryan Giggs’ side beat Ireland 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday, winning seven aerial duels, the most of any Wales player.

He made two brilliant tackles and two last-ditch blocks, and proved he can still read the game extremely well with four interceptions and a whopping seven clearances.

Williams performance vs Ireland

The Gers have stumbled across a great partnership with Katic and Goldson, but when Joe Worrall returns from his loan spell and McAuley retires they will absolutely have to sign another centre back.

Williams still has a few good years left in him, is a fantastic leader, and thanks to his unwanted status at Everton price would not be an issue.

So, Rangers fans, would you like to see a 2019 move for Williams? Could he be your leader at the back? A new cult hero? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
