Connor Goldson could be the no-nonsense defender Rangers badly need

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Rangers are interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion defender Connor Goldson this summer.

What’s the story?

Steven Gerrard knows that signings must be made at Ibrox this summer if the club are going to compete for silverware next season and having already secured the likes of Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor, it’s set to be a busy transfer window.

One player on their radar is Brighton man Connor Goldson, with The Scottish Sun reporting that Gerrard is keen on adding him to his new look defensive line next term.

Although a fee isn’t mentioned in the report, he is currently rated at £650,000 by Transfermarkt, putting him within reach of the Light Blues.

Would he be a good signing?

Defenders needed

The big failing of the Rangers team this season was undoubtedly their unsettled defence. With neither Pedro Caixinha nor Graeme Murty able to find a consistent centre-back pairing, despite heavy investment in the position, the Light Blues paid for it.

The Ibrox side scored more goals than anyone in the top-flight, more than Celtic even, with 76 league goals. However, their 50 goals conceded was more than any other side in the top six and, rather shockingly, double the amount that the Hoops conceded in league action.

Goldson may not be the most well known of names but he has a proven track record in the English lower leagues and, on the cusp of being Premier League quality, his physicality, combined with a no-nonsense style of defending, could be what Rangers need to find some stability next season.

Frankly, their defending can’t get much worse and Gerrard must treat that area with the utmost priority or the club will be going nowhere fast next season.
