The January transfer window is rapidly approaching and soon the headlines will be filled with stories from far and wide linking clubs with every player imaginable. Beyond all that press bluster though, clubs will be looking to get some serious work done in an effort to boost their squads and despite a transformative summer window, Rangers will be no different.

The Light Blues backed Pedro Caixinha heavily between seasons and while some of his signings have worked out fine, others have left a lot to be desired. With a new manager expected to come into the club before January, he'll want to stamp his own authority on the squad, making it an important month for the club.

They need players capable of competing for first team places but who are also affordable, with the summer's spend likely to have hampered the new manager's ability to splash the cash.

Fortunate then there are four stars out there with affordable price tags that are good enough to have an impact at Ibrox in the short and long-term.

These are the FOUR talents the Light Blues should pursue in January...

Lewis Morgan

A Scottish U21 international currently playing with St Mirren, Morgan is one of the leading young Scottish talents in the country and has been exceptional for the high flying Buddies so far this season.

He's scored eight goals and assisted five more in 16 appearances, helping his team to the top of the Scottish Championship table and showing the kind of form that hints he could be a hit in the top-flight too.

An attacking midfielder deployed primarily on the left wing, he could provide a much-needed spark to that side of the pitch, an area that's had to be filled by players unnatural in the position this season after the departure of Barrie McKay.

With his contract up at the end of the season, he's a prime January target and someone the Light Blues should definitely be looking at, or risk seeing him move away from Scottish football completely.

Kenny McLean

Full Scotland international Kenny McLean has been one of the most consistent midfielders in the country for a few years now and his time at Aberdeen is coming to an end.

Dons boss Derek McInnes confirmed recently that the 25-year-old will be leaving Pittodrie at the end of the season, with his contract due to expire.

That leaves the door open for a club like Rangers to step in this January and bring him to Glasgow, reuniting him with old teammate Ryan Jack in the heart of the Light Blues midfield.

He would offer the Ibrox side a more dynamic presence in the middle of the pitch, often far more willing to run beyond attackers into the final third and get himself on the end of chances for the Dons.

After losing their captain to Rangers in the summer, losing McLean to them as well would be a bitter blow to Aberdeen, who are seen as a real barrier to the hopes and dreams of the Light Blues this season.

Louis Moult

Outside of Celtic, Louis Moult is perhaps the most talented striker in the Scottish top-flight right, scoring consistently and performing to a high standard for Motherwell for a number of years now.

Scoring 18 goals apiece in his previous two seasons for the Steelmen, he's on a tear this term, already scoring 12 goals and providing three assists in 16 appearances, well on his way to breaking his best ever total for the club.

That's if he doesn't move this January of course. If he keeps up this kind of form then many clubs are likely to be interested in his services and Rangers should make themselves one.

He showed recently the damage he can do in big matches, netting twice in the League Cup semi-final against Pedro Caixinha's team. Making him a priority would add a proven goalscorer in the Scottish game and give them a real mid-season boost in their chase on Aberdeen and Celtic.

Greg Docherty

Greg Docherty has been one of the stand outs in the Scottish Premiership so far this season. Still just 21 years of age, he's been gaining plaudits for his central midfield play, crucial in wins against the likes of Hibernian and Dundee in the early part of the season.

In total he's scored just twice, but has assisted five goals in 13 top-flight matches, not an insignificant total for a team in the bottom half of the table.

While he has plenty of learning to do, he remains one of the brighter prospects in the division, gaining recognition on the international scene with caps for the Scotland U21 side.

Hamilton have brought through some excellent midfield talents in recent years and Docherty is following in the footsteps of the likes of James McArthur and James McCarthy. That duo left Scottish football before the big clubs in the country could get their hands on them and Rangers shouldn't sleep on Docherty, or risk losing his talent as well.
