Rangers were humbled by Bayer Leverkusen at Ibrox on Thursday night as Steven Gerrard suffered his first home defeat in Europe since he took over at the club.

The 3-1 result leaves the Gers on the brink in the Europa League, though uncertainty over when the competition will resume suggests the second leg could be some time away.

The hosts were outclassed at times and the gulf in class was laid bare in the contrasting performances of Kai Havertz and Joe Aribo - Havertz completed two key passes and three dribbles compared to zero and one respectively for Aribo, per Whoscored.

The 23-year-old's display naturally provoked criticism from plenty of supporters, with one fan suggesting he was the worst player on the pitch.

And the display prompted plenty of discussion regarding Gerrard's team selection.

One fan claimed that he isn't good enough to start and implied that Aribo is more effective from the substitutes bench.

And these two fans, meanwhile, pointed fingers at Gerrard's decision to play the former Charlton ace down the right hand side.

One fan alluded to earlier performances in which Aribo has struggled on the right and suggested the manager hasn't learned from his previous mistakes.

Indeed, with Ianis Hagi routed to the substitutes bench until the 68th minute, Rangers were lacking a creative spark for much of the game.
