Former Ibrox boss Mark Warburton reckons Steven Gerrard was right to reject the advances of Derby County, believing next season has the potential for Rangers to win trophies, as reported by talkSPORT.

What's he said?

The Times reported earlier this week that Derby were interested in appointing Gerrard should Frank Lampard leave to take charge of Chelsea, with the Gers manager rejecting the notion completely.

Warburton, who has taken charge of QPR in the English Championship, understands what it means to be a manager both north and south of the border and reckons Gerrard's belief in his Ibrox project is the right career move, believing next season could be a big one for the club.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he's still got it! Check out the video below...

As quoted by talkSPORT, the 56-year-old said:

"Steven Gerrard is at a magnificent institution of a club.

After all the managerial changes and squad adaptations, I truly believe next season is Rangers’ season.

I think Steven would be very keen, I’m sure, to stay at that great club, take it forward, stop Celtic’s run and establish himself as a legend within the club.

Derby is a fantastic Championship club with fantastic support, but in Glasgow Rangers you have a real institution there.

I’m sure Steven is keen to dispel any such rumours and focus on the task at hand."

Can Rangers challenge next season?

Finishing nine points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership last season, there's still quite a gap that Rangers need to close to stop the Hoops winning a ninth league title in a row.

So far this summer recruitment at Ibrox has been sound with just a few more additions needed, specifically in defence.

If the Gers start the season well and pick up an early derby victory, which they've shown they can do under Gerrard, they'll fancy their chances heading deeper into the league campaign.

More realistically though real progress would see the club pick up any of the three domestic trophies on offer next season. A cup win would be a big reward for the improvements Gerrard has already made at Rangers.

It's been years since their last major trophy win and delivering at least one piece of silverware should be next season's big aim, as well as finding more consistency in the league.
