The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell has revealed why Steven Gerrard “can’t afford to drop” Alfredo Morelos for the Europa League clash against Bayer Leverkusen.
The Colombia international has scored an impressive 29 goals this season, while also grabbing ten assists in all competitions – however, he has truly been out-of-sorts since the turn of the year.
Morelos has scored just one goal in 2020, and his only strike since Boxing Day came in a 4-1 win over Hamilton at the beginning of February – he was also dropped for the Scottish Cup defeat to Hearts for disciplinary reasons.
As Campbell states, the Colombian’s backup – Florian Kamberi – started the Gers’ last Europa League outing against Braga and did well “defensively” according to the journalist.
However, The Athletic writer believes that Gerrard “can’t afford to drop” Morelos as he is the club’s “talisman” – even if he is out of sorts.
You can see what Campbell tweeted just hours before kick-off below:
Harsh on Kamberi as he was much better than Morelos again Braga, certainly defensively. But Morelos is the talisman and Rangers can’t afford to drop him even if he is not on his game.
