According to the Daily Express, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will be backed by the board in the transfer market to make four new signings, and he should target his former club Liverpool again to sign Adam Lewis on loan.

What's the situation?

The Express reports that although Rangers announced losses of £14m recently, there will be funds available for Gerrard to add to his squad in the winter transfer window, and a defender is a target.

The Liverpool and England legend made 15 signings over the summer but was critical of his side after their Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Aberdeen recently, claiming that they didn’t have enough quality to compete for trophies.

Two of those summer signings were loan deals from the Liverpool youth set-up, with Ryan Kent and Ovie Ejaria making the move to Glasgow having worked under Gerrard at Liverpool. With more signings being targeted in January though, the Gers should look at left-back Lewis.

Quality service

Recently, Goal reported that Alberto Moreno would not be given a new contract at Anfield and that he would be allowed to leave on a free-transfer in the summer of 2019. The Spaniard lost his place to Andrew Robertson last season and in truth has struggled since arriving in the summer of 2014.

The report also claimed that Jurgen Klopp had been impressed by 18-year-old academy prospect Lewis, and that he would become the understudy to Robertson next season.

Lewis has played 11 games for Liverpool’s U23s so far this season, providing an impressive five assists from an attacking left-back role, and with Gerrard forced to play midfielder Andy Halliday in that position during the win over St Mirren it is clear that another signing could be on the cards.
