Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will no doubt be looking to make a signing or two in January, and his first port of call should actually be Manchester United for young winger Tahith Chong.

What’s the situation?

After the Gers’ 1-0 loss to Aberdeen in the Scottish League Cup semi-final some weeks back, Gerrard hinted that he would need to make more signings if his current crop could not produce the necessary level when called upon.

This call for January transfer action from the boss was despite the 15 signings that the former Liverpool legend made in the summer window to completely overhaul his squad.

Discounting the League Cup loss though, Rangers have started reasonably well under Gerrard and sit third in the league as well as third and level on points with Spartak Moscow in their Europa League group after making it through the qualifying rounds. Any signings made in January then will have to be seriously talented to take the Glasgow side up another level.

Improving quality

Chong though would surely do this. The 18-year-old right-winger is yet to make his debut for the Manchester giants, but he has netted five goals and provided two assists in 11 games for the U23 side. Despite his young years and the quality in the United squad, Chong has also been included on the bench for the first team by Mourinho this season.

The Dutchman was signed from the Feyenoord academy on a free transfer in the summer of 2016 and has represented his country at every level between the U15 and U19 levels, but he is yet to experience first-team football and a loan move to Scotland could do his career a world of good, as well as benefitting the Gers.

Gerrard’s past relationship with Manchester United and ties with Liverpool could slow down any deal, but as manager of Rangers he must put this aside in order to secure a top talent like Chong on loan.
