Rangers boss Steven Gerrard could upgrade his options at left-back in the January transfer window with a loan move for Chelsea youngster Juan Castillo.

What's the situation?

The Gers are currently sitting in third place in both the Scottish Premier League table and their Europa League group, so Gerrard will be keen to add some quality to his squad in January in order to facilitate a push on both fronts.

According to a recent report from the Daily Express, although Rangers announced losses of £14m for the year up to June, there will be funds available for Gerrard to add to his squad in the winter transfer window, and a defender is a target.

The Liverpool and England legend made 15 signings over the summer but was critical of his side after their Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Aberdeen, claiming that they didn’t have enough quality to compete for trophies.

Improving options

Signing Castillo could solve one of Gerrard's biggest current headaches. The 38-year-old boss has generally gone with midfielder Andy Halliday at left-back so far this season, with summer signing Jon Flanagan filling in as backup, so signing a natural in that position should be a priority.

18-year-old Castillo joined Chelsea’s academy on a free transfer in the summer of 2016 after leaving the well-respected Ajax youth system, meaning he has had one of the best football educations available.

The Dutchman is an attacking full-back who has scored one goal and provided an impressive five assists in 14 appearances for the Chelsea U23 side so far this season, but a loan move to Rangers would give him a chance to experience competitive first-team football for the first time.
