Opinion: Rangers should help Morelos by signing Defoe

Steven Gerrard staunchly denied that Rangers are over-reliant on Alfredo Morelos when asked about it on Tuesday, but should the Gers make a shock move for Jermain Defoe?

What’s the word?

“Every team is reliant on their number nine”, Gerrard fired back when asked about the Gers’ dependence on Morelos in his pre-Aberdeen press conference.

While Gerrard is right, the fact that Kyle Lafferty has looked pretty poor so far this season is definitely a concern.

The Northern Irishman hasn’t been the perfect foil for Morelos than many hoped he would be, and the gaffer should take some pressure off his Colombian superstar by signing Bournemouth outcast Defoe.

Is he still good enough?

Defoe has played just 22 minutes for Bournemouth this season, but that is mostly down to the electric form of both Josh King and Callum Wilson, making it almost impossible for the veteran striker to get on the pitch.

The 36 year-old striker is up there with the best finishers in the Premier League though, and his natural goalscorer’s touch is not something he will ever lose.

He scored four times in 11 starts for Bournemouth last season, taking his total to 202 club goals throughout his career. He also has 20 goals in 57 England caps, so he certainly knows how to stick the ball in the back of the net.

As well as the depth and rotation options he would offer Gerrard, Defoe’s arrival would also be brilliant for Morelos.

The young Colombian international is in unstoppable form this season, but he can be naive and wasteful at times.

Defoe knows every trick in the book, and the former Sunderland fan favourite would quickly endear himself to the fans at Ibrox too, both with his attitude on the pitch and off it.

So, Rangers fans, would you back a January move for Defoe? Would he be better support for Morelos than Lafferty? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
