Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will be hoping to add some extra quality to his ranks in the winter transfer window in order for the club to challenge Celtic in the Scottish Premier League, and a move for Sunderland man Lynden Gooch would certainly fit this brief.

What's the situation?

The Gers currently sit in second place in the league, but they are just two points behind their fierce Glasgow rivals and this could be their best chance in years to mount a proper title challenge.

Gerrard's side have lacked quality at key moments so far this season though, including in the 1-0 Scottish League Cup semi-final defeat to Aberdeen and the 0-0 draw with Villarreal in the Europa League on Thursday this week.

With one more creative midfielder or attacker, Gerrard would have a seriously dangerous squad that Brendan Rodgers and co would certainly have to be wary of, and that man could be Gooch in January.

Career prime

The 22-year-old can play on either wing or in a central attacking midfield role and has been in the form of his life so far this season. In total, Gooch has an outstanding six goals and eight assists in just 19 games during this campaign, and he is bound to attract interest come January.

The USA international was linked with a number of clubs in January, including a return to his home state of California with the San Jose Earthquakes, according to Goal USA.
