Liverpool are expected to allow Alberto Moreno to leave for free next summer, and Steven Gerrard should look to work his magic again to bring the flying Spaniard to Ibrox.

What's the story?

According to Neil Jones from GOAL.com, Liverpool will allow Moreno’s contract to expire next summer.

With less than 12 months left on his current deal, many Reds’ fans expected a new deal for the 26 year-old, but the report claims academy product Adam Lewis will be promoted to the first team instead.

While wages may be a stumbling block, the speedy left back has been warming the bench for nearly 12 months now, and the promise of regular European football under a Liverpool legend may just be enough to convince him to join Gerrard’s revolution.

A left-sided Tavernier?

Rangers signed Jon Flanagan from Anfield this summer, but signing Moreno would be a huge upgrade. The Sevilla academy product has four Spain caps to his name, and won the Europa League with his hometown club in 2014.

This is not to say Gerrard would no longer have a use for Flanagan, as the Englishman’s ability to play on either flank would be a huge boost for squad depth.

However, Moreno’s pace, ability on the ball, rocket left foot and tireless work rate would basically give the Gers another James Tavernier on the opposite side. Borna Barisic would also put up quite the fight for that left back spot, but Moreno could also be used further forward due to his pace, so there could certainly be room for both of them.

Fans may have doubts over Moreno’s defensive ability, but it feels harsh to judge a young defender who was introduced to English football in a dysfunctional defence alongside the likes of Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho.

Flanagan may be a fan favourite at Ibrox for his toughness and passion, but signing Moreno would simply be too good of an opportunity to pass up, and he would immediately compete with Barisic for that spot on the left flank.
