Former Scotland international full-back Jackie McNamara wasn't impressed with Borna Barisic's debut season as a Rangers defender, speaking to website Football Insider.

What's he said?

Barisic arrived from the Gers' UEFA Europa League opponents NK Osijek last summer after impressing in qualifying against the Ibrox side but has failed to make the left-back position his own.

One of Steven Gerrard's big initial signings, his lack of progress has been a big disappointment for Rangers supporters.

McNamara, who knows a thing or two about what it takes to become a successful full-back in Scotland, reckons he can't have been impressing the Gers boss behind the scenes.

As quoted by Football Insider, he said:

He looked good, and then disappeared. He caught my eye when I watched him against Rangers and started quite well when he came to Scotland.

His delivery from wide areas was good and he was a threat on the overlap.

But then he was in and out of the side, and didn’t play at all at the end of the season, so he couldn’t have impressed the manager in training.

Is there a future for him at Ibrox?

Having made just 22 appearances for the club, not only are there question marks about the player's ability, but also his fitness, being unavailable for large chunks of the season.

As frustrating as that was for Rangers supporters, there is the potential for him to improve massively if he can get a run of games under his belt after a strong pre-season.

Given he is regularly selected for a talented Croatia side, he must have something to his game that can benefit Gerrard's side consistently next season.

To write him off so early in his Rangers career would be wrong and although it may be tempting to cash in on him this summer, the club should be looking to do what it takes to get him on the pitch and playing confidently.

McNamara isn't wrong when assessing his debut season, but with patience and the right manager, Barisic can still come good at Ibrox.
