Rangers are closing in on the signature of Charlton Atheltic midfielder Joe Aribo, according to The Scottish Sun.

What's the story?

The paper reckon that the 22-year-old is set to tell Charlton boss Lee Bowyer on Friday about his intentions to quit the newly promoted English Championship side after holding a second round of contract talks with Rangers.

The report states that Aribo is "almost certainly" on his way to Ibrox despite links with other clubs and could join up with his new teammates for a pre-season training camp in Portugal next week.

With his contract expiring at the Addicks, Rangers will only have to pay a compensation fee to land the exciting midfielder.

Why has he chosen Rangers?

The opportunity to work under legendary Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard can't have played a small part in Aribo's thinking when determining his football future.

Being coached by an English football icon like that can give him new insights into his midfield game and allow him to develop his game beyond what he's already been doing for Charlton, which included ten goals and five assists last season.

The Championship is a competitive and exciting league, but the chance to play in front of almost 50,000 people every week and challenge for trophies will also hold some appeal, as will the tantalising prospect of UEFA Europa League football.

With regular first-team football also likely for the midfielder, it all adds up to a pretty good package from Aribo's perspective and if he does end up joining he will have a fantastic chance to boost his burgeoning reputation even further.
