Rangers are reportedly eyeing a deal for Martin Skrtel, and the Slovakian international’s experience would be a huge boost for the Gers’ young defence.

What's the story?

According to CNN in Turkey (via Daily Record), Steven Gerrard has not given up on Skrtel, who he wanted to sign this summer.

The feisty Fenerbahce centre back will be out of contract next summer, meaning the Gers could potentially get him for an absolute bargain in January.

The Daily Record report claims Skrtel was Gerrard’s top target in the summer, and at 33 he certainly still has some gas left in the tank.

Why do Rangers need him?

Rangers have struggled defensively in recent weeks, and the dramatic 4-3 defeat in Moscow saw some truly awful defending.

Skrtel does have a mistake in him, but the 33 year-old is far more experienced than the likes of Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Joe Worrall, all of whom have had very limited first team opportunities in their careers so far.

Signing the 6 ft 3 in beast to a short-term contract would aid the development of Gerrard’s young core of defenders, and by the time that contract is up they would be more than ready to take the helm.

Is he still good enough?

The ex-Liverpool ace is a truly old-fashioned centre back, as if he’s not bullying strikers with his aggression and strength he is planting headers in the top corner at the other end.

Skrtel scored 16 Premier League goals for Liverpool, and has already bagged five league goals since his move to Turkey.

He is winning over three aerial duels per game this season in the Turkish league, as well as averaging an incredible 7.2 clearances per game.

The goalscoring colossus loves a tussle, and perhaps the one concern about his game is the potential introduction of VAR, for which he will certainly have to tone down his shirt-grabbing in the box.

Despite this, the 101-cap Slovakian is a better natural defender than any of the Gers’ current crop, and his experience in the Premier League and Champions League will be a huge asset.
