Rangers secured a point with a 0-0 draw against Spanish side Villarreal on Thursday at Ibrox, meaning their Europa League group will go down to the wire.
Steven Gerrard’s side managed the draw despite playing with 10 men for more than half the game, after winger Daniel Candeias was sent off for two yellow cards in the first period.
The 30-year-old Portuguese ace was already on a yellow card when three players bundled through the back of Santiago Caseres and although it looked like striker Alfredo Morelos had committed the foul, Candeias was given a second yellow card by referee Matej Jug.
The sending off was Candeias’ second controversial red in just a matter of weeks after referee Willie Collum sent him off in confusing circumstances in the league win over St Mirren.
Many fans on Twitter were calling for the Europa League bosses to overturn the decision, and even more expressed their dismay.

A player gets a red card for a foul he didn’t commit. That’s referees for you

Terrible decision considering it wasn’t him that committed the foul

Candeias again red carded for absolutely nothing.

If the ref gave the toul on Tav before it all kicked off, the challenge from Morelos/Candeias doesn't even happen

Absolutely unbelievable, Morelos commits the foul and the ref sends off Candeias! What exactly is the linesman seeing there! Officials having an absolute nightmare, embarrassing!
