Rangers fans on Twitter heap praise on summer signing Gareth McAuley after Hearts win

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers went to the top of the Scottish Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Hearts on Sunday, and plenty of fans took to Twitter after the game to praise centre-back Gareth McAuley.

The 38-year-old was signed by Gerrard on a one-year deal in September after he left West Bromwich Albion at the end of his contract.

The Hearts clash was just his fourth appearance of the season, but McAuley’s experience and presence seemed to help the whole of the Rangers back four.

It wasn’t all good news for the Northern Irish international, as he initially gave Hearts the lead by diverting Marcus Godinho’s cross into his own net, but the Glasgow side came back strongly and McAuley certainly made amends with his performance.

The former Leicester and Ipswich defender looks to have been an astute signing by Gerrard, and fans were already calling for him to start the Old Firm derby at the end of December. Check out some of the best reaction below.
