Rangers have been moved into heavy favourites to land Jermain Defoe this summer, but they should switch their attentions to a Liverpool striker who would love to star for Steven Gerrard.

What's the word?

According to Oddschecker, Rangers are now 3/1 to land Defoe, as odds were slashed on a move for the veteran striker this week. No other team is lower than 10/1.

The former Tottenham and Sunderland striker, who has 20 goals in 57 England caps, is likely to leave Bournemouth this summer in search of first team opportunities.

Back at Gerrard’s old stomping ground though there is another striker searching for more playing time, a hungrier, younger and faster addition than Defoe – Danny Ings.

The 25 year-old has reportedly asked to leave Anfield this summer to get more playing time. Jürgen Klopp does not want to lose the striker, but is willing to let him leave as he recognises his desire for regular first team football.

Rangers ended the season 12 points behind Celtic last season, and signing a truly top goalscorer would go an awful long way to closing that gap. It would also make the rest of the league sit up and take notice.

Would he join?

The first issue would of course be convincing the player to move outside the Premier League. Rangers cannot offer the wages a club like Liverpool would, but Ings is motivated more by his hunger to succeed than anything else. After two devastating knee injuries, the former Burnley is simply desperate to play football again.

Gerrard could also play a part. The Reds’ legend has already been linked with a move for Dominic Solanke this summer, so he’s certainly not afraid to poach some talent from his old home. The pulling power of having a Premier League legend at the helm simply cannot be underestimated.

It’s unlikely the club would be able to splash out millions on a permanent deal, so a loan could be perfect for all parties. Rangers would get a hungry player looking to revive his career, and Liverpool can get a much larger fee next summer if he’s been banging in goals up north rather than warming the Anfield bench.

What's all the fuss about?

Ings hasn’t really had a chance to prove himself at Liverpool, but the 25 year-old has bags of pace and loves making darting runs in behind. His movement was a big factor in his excellent goalscoring record at Burnley, and his finishing isn’t bad either.

Above all else, you’d be hard pushed to find a harder working player, something that will endear him to the fans very quickly. His tenacious hassling of opposition defenders would lift both the crowd and his teammates, and he is deceptively strong with the ball at his feet.

If Gerrard goes for Defoe, he’ll get a proven goalscorer but not much else. A move for Ings would add pace, fight, skill and plenty of goals of his own.
