Much like many at Rangers, Ryan Kent has become an enigma. One minute he’s a player who shines incredibly bright but the next moment, he’s a huge source of frustration.

Alfredo Morelos is another who now fits into that boat. He’s scored 29 times this season but not one of them has come in 2020. Similarly, James Tavernier is also a perplexing figure.

In one match he’s failing to clear his lines – take Hearts for example – and the next he’s whipping a dangerous ball into the box for George Edmundson to head home during their defeat to Leverkusen.

The Europa League has been a warm sense of solace for the Gers this calendar year. In the league they’ve failed to win five matches and have fallen 13 points off top spot. Yet in Europe, they’ve enjoyed a successful run.

For large parts of their encounter with the German outfit, they were in the match. Had it not been for their clinical nature they may have had something to take into the second leg. As it happens, they were dealt a 3-1 defeat courtesy of goals from the mercurial Kai Havertz, Charles Aranguiz and Leon Bailey.

Kent may not possess the tricky and mesmerising skills that Bailey has but on his day, he can be a fantastic player. His goal against Braga in Portugal a few weeks ago is enough to testify that. However, on too many occasions he’s been found wanting at Ibrox.

The winger has taken criticism and after his display on Thursday, he’s handed Steven Gerrard a huge headache going forward.

The 23-year-old was keen to get on the ball versus Leverkusen but he never really did anything promising with possession. He only achieved one accurate cross and one successful dribble. On top of that, he lost the play a colossal 18 times.

This wasn’t the sign of someone who cost the Light Blues £7m last summer. In fact, it was quite the opposite. Speaking after the match on BT Sport, Ally McCoist noted: “He just looks totally bereft of confidence. You just don’t think he’s going to get by anyone.”

Chris Sutton added: “He’s suffering from the crowd here and he’s not the only one.”

The intense pressure is clearly getting to Kent and you can sense the crowd are on his back before he’s even got the ball. For someone who loves to get at his man he will naturally lose possession more often, but that isn’t helping his cause in Glasgow.

Going into further fixtures, Gerrard has to work out whether to stick or twist. One man who isn’t suffering from the crowd is Florian Kamberi.

The loanee helped change the momentum on Thursday, taking 25 touches in just 37 minutes. In comparison, Kent managed 38 during the entire 90 minutes.

Both Kamberi and Ianis Hagi are now waiting on the sidelines and stand a very good chance of becoming permanent members of the starting XI - whether that’s instead of Kent, however, only time will tell.
