According to reports in The Scottish Sun, Rangers have been given the green light to re-sign midfielder Steven Davis from Southampton during the January transfer window.

What's the word, then?

Well, The Scottish Sun report that new Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl won't stand in the soon-to-be 34-year-old's way if he receives an offer in the New Year, with the Northern Ireland international#s contract due to run out at the end of the season.

Davis may have hoped that he could extend his career with the Premier League club after putting in an impressive display on a rare start in front of his new manager in the 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last Wednesday, but the writing is clearly on the wall for the midfielder after the 51-year-old left him out of his 18-man squad for the 1-0 loss to Cardiff City on Saturday.

The Scottish Sun report that the long-serving Saint will be free to talk to other clubs on January 1 – his birthday and when the transfer window re-opens – and while the south coast outfit could command a fee they are likely to let him go on a free as a thank you for his six-and-a-half years of service.

Would he be a good signing?

While he may be getting no younger and his legs aren't quite as sprightly as they once were, there is no doubt that Davis can still play a big role for Rangers – especially in terms of creativity where they have often struggled this term.

The 33-year-old is neat on the ball and has the ability to unlock defences, and someone like Alfredo Morelos would surely not only thrive on his service, but also learn a lot from his experience, leadership and calm nature when he finds himself in trouble on the pitch.

Gerrard laid into some of his players after the weekend draw with Dundee and suggested that he would only pick players that he can trust in the future, and Davis 100% would come under that category should he make an emotional Ibrox return.
