The January transfer window is rapidly approaching and for Rangers it's a chance to finally utilise the connections and experience of Director Of Football Mark Allen and freshen up their squad.

The Light Blues invested heavily in previous manager Pedro Caixinha but most of their summer signings were his picks and perhaps aren't as compatible at Ibrox as they once were.

The Portuguese also failed to find a suitable left-sided winger to replace the departed Barrie McKay, leaving Rangers having to shoehorn players into the position, experiments that have largely failed so far this term.

With resources limited and a problem position needing filled, who should they move for?

Here are THREE cost-effective wingers that are good enough to make a first team impact at Ibrox...

Lewis Morgan

Lewis Morgan is a St Mirren winger who has a growing reputation after a stellar start to the season in the Scottish Championship. He's been instrumental to the Buddies' rise to second in the table, scoring 10 goals and providing eight assists in just 22 appearances.

It's an attacking contribution that has resulted in him being heavily linked with Celtic in recent weeks, although that doesn't mean that Rangers shouldn't make an attempt to bring him to Ibrox instead.

He was a youngster at Ibrox after all and it would be frustrating for supporters see a player formerly on their books grow as a player elsewhere and eventually join their arch rivals.

With the ability to play on the left and right wings and through the middle, he'd add real depth and versatility to Rangers' squad whether they opt to field wingers or go for the diamond formation seen in recent weeks.

Still just 21, he could be a real hit at Rangers for years to come.

Jamie Walker

Jamie Walker was the subject of interest from Rangers all summer long earlier in the year, making moves to sign him right up until transfer deadline day when the deal finally fell through. However, his contract runs out at the end of May meaning he is now free to speak to any club he likes.

If the Light Blues can sign him on a pre-contract then they could potentially negotiate a cut-price deal for him in January and finally make the make the move a reality.

His form last season was impressive, scoring 15 goals from the left wing and generally being a terror to opposition defences. While he hasn't quite kept up that form this term, it's unknown whether the dip is due to uncertainty about his future at Hearts.

He's cheap, available and has great potential and he's definitely someone Rangers should be considering.

Jamie Murphy

If Rangers don't want to secure some of the brightest young Scottish talent around then they could cast their towards a more experienced Scottish winger.

Brighton & Hove Albion's Jamie Murphy has struggled for game time at the English Premier League new boys this term despite being a first team regular in the previous two seasons in the English Championship.

He is of course well known to Scottish football fans after a successful spell at Motherwell and his skill and experience would undoubtedly add something to the Rangers first team on the left wing, where he naturally excels.

Signing players on the fringes of English Premier League squads could be a great strategy for the Light Blues, even if they have to settle for a short-term loan. There's areas of the team that need improved and players not getting game time like Murphy could do a great job at Ibrox.
