They played their home matches at the Old Showground until 1988 and contest Humber derby games with Grimsby Town and Hull City. Scunthorpe turned professional in 1912 after joining the Midland League and were crowned champions in 1926/27 and 1938/39. In 1950, they were finally elected into the Football League.
Securing promotion as champions of the Third Division North in 1957/58, the Irons spent six seasons in the Second Division before relegation 1964, followed by another relegation to the fourth tier three years later. The club then spent 34 of the next 37 seasons in the lowest tier of the Football League.
In the 2004/05 campaign, Scunthorpe were promoted to League One, and went onto win that title in 2006/07. However, they only spent one season in the Championship before suffering relegation, but winning the 2009 League One play-off final placed them back into the second tier.
That success was short-lived though, and found themselves in the fourth tier by 2013.
