According to a fresh report from Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli's Dries Mertens would still like to stay at the club amid reported interest in his signature, particularly from Arsenal.

What's the word, then?

The 32-year-old's current deal with Napoli expires in the coming summer and while there has been some indication that he could potentially leave the club for that very reason, Di Marzio's report suggests that isn't the case.

Mertens appears eager to wear the blue kit of the Italian giants and a contract renewal is still possible.

The journalist states that the dialogue is very much alive and seeing how Arsenal and Chelsea were previously reported to be holding talks for the veteran forward, this will undoubtedly come as a big blow for them.

For Napoli, however, it's definitely good news.

Verdict

Even though Mertens is already 32 years old, he is still massively contributing to Napoli in the ongoing 2019/20 season, as is evidenced by his goal tally.

So far, he has netted nine goals across all competitions for the Italians in the current campaign, and has even added a total of four assists on the side as well.

Quite clearly, he still has something to offer to his team despite age slowly but surely catching up with him.

Di Marzio's report doesn't state any specifics on his possible renewal but since the current deal is set to expire in the summer, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume he will most likely get at least some sort of an extension.

And as things stand, with him on good form and Napoli needing all the help they can get - seeing how they're sitting in 11th at the moment - this might be a good decision by the club.
