Sheffield United are rumoured to be interested in a deal to sign Liverpool defender Ben Davies on loan, according to The Sun.

What's the story?

Davies only signed for Liverpool back in February 2021, as Jurgen Klopp looked to add depth to his defensive options, with both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk ruled out of action through injury for the majority of the 2020/21 season.

But Davies' arrival hasn't seen him go straight into the starting XI, with the 25-year-old still yet to play a single minute of action for the Reds' senior side.

That has seen Sheffield United register their interest in taking Davies on loan ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, as they look to bolster their own defensive options this summer, with promotion back into the Premier League being the aim for Slavisa Jokanovic's side.

It'd be a shrewd move by the Blades

This could turn out to be a shrewd signing by the Blades, as they'll need players that have experience of playing in the Championship, and having additional depth during the hectic schedule in the second tier will be more than welcome for any manager.

Davies would be somewhat of a risk-free signing, as it would only be on a temporary basis, though it remains to be seen how much of his £60k-per-week wages the Blades would have to cover.

He's already got a considerable amount of experience of playing in the Championship, so you would imagine that it won't take long for him to adjust to the demands of the second tier once again this summer.

The 25-year-old made more clearances on average than all but one of the Preston North End team during the 2020/21 season, as Davies averaged 4.3 clearances per game, with Liam Lindsay being the only other player ahead of him in the list at 4.4 per game.

Davies made a rapid rise through the ranks with Preston North End as well, with the centre-back winning the club's Young Player of the Season award in the 2017/18 campaign, before scooping the Player of the Season award in the following year, as well as the Sir Tom Finney Player of the Year award.

Davies was previously labelled as 'different class' for his performances whilst at Southport, with their manager Paul Carden issuing high praise for the defender in an interview with The Athletic.

"He was a different class and I did think he’d get in Preston’s first team. If you’d have asked me whether he’d sign for Liverpool, I probably wouldn’t have said so."

United have moved on Phil Jagielka ahead of the 2021/22 season, and with Kean Bryan's future still remaining somewhat 'up in the air', you can understand the Blades' thinking when it comes to targeting another defender before their season opener against Birmingham City on Saturday 7th August.

Davies has played regularly in the Championship for four seasons whilst with Preston North End, and you would imagine that he'll be keen to make up for lost time with a new club this summer, and Sheffield United could be the team to benefit from that in the near future, which is certain to excite the Bramall Lane faithful, as they target promotion this term.

Jokanovic must follow up his interest with a bid.
