While Josh Windass will undoubtedly be a key part of any Sheffield Wednesday promotion push this season, Darren Moore may be wishing that Fernando Forestieri was still with the Owls.

The Argentine-born attacking midfielder joined Sheffield Wednesday in August 2015 and would go on to make 134 appearances during his time at Hillsborough, contributing an impressive 40 goals and 18 assists.

Although a controversial figure at times, Forestieiri's performances quickly made him a fan favourite, while he also won over manager Carlos Carvalhal, with the Portuguese manager full of praise for his talisman after he returned from injury with a goal against Cardiff in 2017.

He said: “It is like you receive a gift, a box, and you don’t know what will be inside. When you open the box, you know.

“Fernando had not played in a long so when he came back and trained well, you do not know. But his reaction was very positive and he gave a good performance.
“We are happy because he is a fantastic player." Forestieri would eventually leave Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2020, spending a year with Udinese in Serie A, where he contributed four goals and two assists in 28 appearances. He would then make the peculiar move to Malaysian top-tier side Johor Darul Ta’zim in January of this year, where he has shown that he still has a lot of quality, with the standard of football there seemingly well below Forestieri's talents. The former Italy youth international has already notched 21 goals and 11 assists in 30 appearances for the Malaysian side, which suggests that he hasn't forgotten where the back of the net is. While Windass has been one of Wednesday's best performers this season, with four goals and four assists to his name in League One, Forestieri would arguably be the perfect player for Moore in his preferred 3-4-1-2 formation, and there is no telling the damage he could do in the third tier. Unfortunately for Owls fans, there seems little chance of the little Italian returning to Hillsborough any time soon, but there are plenty of fond memories for them to call on when they remember Forestieri's time at Sheffield Wednesday.
