Sheffield Wednesday battled well throughout against Manchester City but in the end the difference in quality showed, and the Owls were unable to lay a glove on the visitors in a 1-0 defeat.

Garry Monk will be pleased with the improvement shown from his defence, but on the ball Wednesday were a big disappointment with just one shot and a share of 20% possession.

A key reason for that was the inability of the midfield to retain the ball, and that allowed to Citizens to exert themselves on the game and clinch a second-half goal that was enough to send them into the quarter-final.

After the match supporters were quick to pinpoint Joey Pelupessy as one man who was simply not good enough.

He has been the target of a lot of criticism in recent weeks and his lack of involvement against City had some fans questioning if he was even on the pitch, despite playing the full 90 minutes.

It is easy to see how they came to such a view, as the 26-year-old made an abysmal 13 touches throughout the match, yet he was playing in central midfield.

That shows how limited his performance was, though it should be noted that he did a good job of reducing the influence of players like David Silva and Bernado Silva.

His lack of touches drew further criticism from fans, unsurprisingly, and now he must put in an improved display against Brentford if he is to begin turning around fans' opinions of him.

One supporter was also critical of Monk and his decision to leave him on the pitch despite his lack of contribution, and given Pelupessy has been a regular starter recently despite frequently underperforming - with an average WhoScored rating of 6.4 - Monk is deserving of such criticism.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness or Adrian Durham?
