Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a double injury boost at the perfect time for Darren Moore, who will likely be incredibly relieved with Reece James and Akin Famewo back in training.
Sheffield Star reported Joe Crann confirmed the news on Twitter as he shared an image of the two defenders in Owls training ahead of the FA Cup first-round clash against Morecambe on Friday night.
Famewo, who joined from Norwich City for an undisclosed fee during the summer, has made just one appearance for Sheffield Wednesday thus far, picking up the injury on his debut in the win against MK Dons.
James, meanwhile, was impressing as a left-sided centre-back in Moore’s side before his unfortunate injury against Plymouth Argyle last month, which left the Hillsborough outfit desperately short of defensive options.
The 28-year-old joined on loan from Blackpool for the season and has made nine appearances in total, in which the Owls have kept five clean sheets, which emphasises how important he is at Hillsborough.
With Ben Heneghan recently ruled out for likely the rest of the season with an ACL injury, this defensive duo returning to training is ideal timing for Moore, as his side have looked defensively suspect in recent fixtures.
The 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers saw Moore deploy Jaden Brown as a centre-back alongside Mark McGuinness and Michael Ihiekwe, with only some top saves from both goalkeepers in that game keeping the scores level.
Ihiekwe was then suspended for the game against Burton Albion last weekend, which saw Dominic Iorfa make a rare start in Moore’s side, but it seems unlikely that the former Wolves man will make too many more starts now that the Owls have important players coming back.
Considering Morecambe’s disappointing form so far this season, which sees them occupy a relegation spot in the third tier, Moore might consider giving minutes to his returning players on Friday night.
It can only be a huge relief for the Owls that they have defensive players returning given their recent injury and suspension woes at the back, and hopefully, both James and Famewo can play a big part in an automatic promotion push this season.
