Sheffield Wednesday exclusive: Palmer can understand Paterson Scotland snub

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has given his thoughts on Callum Paterson’s omission from the latest Scotland squad, suggesting it could be down to many factors.

Paterson is Wednesday’s joint-top goalscorer alongside Josh Windass; however, it appears that the 26-year-old has not done enough of late to warrant a place in Steve Clarke’s squad.

There does, though, seem to be a pathway back into the Scotland set-up, with the former Reading and West Brom manager revealing he has had a conversation with Paterson about what he has to do to earn a recall.

Can Cadamarteri make it at Wednesday?

Discussing Paterson’s recent omission, Palmer told FFC:

“You always want to pick players that are bang in form, but you also want to pick players that fit the system you want to play. At international level, I think it’s very difficult.

“You might have a player, I think before the European Championships in 96, Alan Shearer hadn’t scored a goal for England, but he was prolific for his club, so would you not pick Alan Shearer because he’s not scoring for England? Of course you still pick Alan Shearer because he fits the criteria that you want and he’s still been prolific for his club.”

On the same subject, the retired England international concluded by saying:

“It just depends on the manager, really. He’s [Paterson] just got to keep doing what he’s doing and keep scoring goals. And if you keep scoring goals as a No.9, you’re going to get recognised at some level.”

Paterson will have the chance to do just that when the Championship returns this week. Wednesday travel to Vicarage Road on Friday to take on Watford before hosting Cardiff City on Easter Monday.
