Steven Fletcher was once again Sheffield Wednesday’s saviour this week as he netted a 95th-minute winner to secure the Owls their second win of 2020 against Charlton Athletic.

The Scot is undoubtedly one of the Yorkshire club’s most important players, topping their scoring charts this term with 13 goals.

However, his contract is up at the end of the season, and that is understandably a bit of a cause for concern.

Fortunately, the 32-year-old has given a positive eye-catching update on his future at Hillsborough this week.

What’s the story then?

The striker confirmed that he’s in talks with the club over a new contract.

“I've spoken to the club (about a new deal) and we are speaking just now,” Fletcher said.

“Obviously we want to get that tied up but, yes, I would love to see my career out here.”

Tread carefully

The Owls have to be very careful about how they handle Fletcher’s contract situation.

Handing out a new deal to a 32-year-old is always a risk, but Fletcher is also Wednesday’s highest earner, reportedly picking up a cool £30k a week.

As he enters the twilight years of his career he will suffer the same fate as every footballer - the dreaded decline.

Wednesday can’t afford to continue paying Fletcher such a high wage, especially if he begins to lose his touch as he grows older.

The Scot has shown that he deserves new terms, but the Owls have to be very particular about the salary they’re offering him and how long the contract will run for.

Fletcher is arguably their most important player at the moment, scoring 13 goals this term, but at his age you never know how long that’s going to last for, and if the Yorkshire club aren’t careful when considering their contract offer it could be catastrophic for them.

In other news, Garry Monk must end his recent experiment.
