Newcastle United could be set to make an opening bid for a top talent from a European league, in the process potentially forming a deadly duo at St James' Park...

Journalist Ignazio Genuardi took to Twitter on Friday to claim that the Magpies are one of several clubs interested in Lorient striker Terem Moffi, stating that PIF are "considering making an offer" for the 23-year-old.

He supplemented this with the €30m (£26m) price tag that the French club will demand, with bonuses and sell-on clauses to be added.

Given Newcastle's previous successes when dipping into the Ligue 1 market, there should be little hesitancy from Dan Ashworth to continue that trend this January.

With Sven Botman (signed from Lille) excelling at the back, averaging a 7.1 rating from WhoScored this season, and Bruno Guimaraes (ex-Lyon) the catalyst for this Newcastle resurgence, adding Moffi to that list would give them an exceptional core to a squad which is improving with each passing week.

Perhaps the Brazilian maestro could feed off yet another attacking outlet, as his relationship with Miguel Almiron details how despite his deep-lying role, he can still contribute offensively.

The 25-year-old boasts three goals and three assists already this season, with a quality from midfield which allows him to perfectly weight his passes to the front three. The Paraguayan winger has duly benefitted, with his goal against Leicester City last month perfectly summing up the earlier statement.

Darting down the right flank, he cut inside and fed his talented team-mate just outside the box. Continuing his run inwards, Guimaraes then perfectly executes the return ball to see Almiron burst through and finish into the bottom left corner.

What makes their relationship even more special is that this description perfectly outlines a similar move against Fulham, albeit with a far more extravagant volleyed finish. In fact, he also set up Almiron's winning goal against Everton in October.

To potentially add Moffi, who has 11 goals already this season, could make for a scintillating attack which might all but secure their Champions League place.

He is made an even more attractive asset due to the longevity of his scoring despite his youth, as in 2021 Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig dubbed him "one of the most prolific U21s in Europe."

The 23-year-old has a neat turn of pace for his 6 foot 3 frame, and his movement would either afford Almiron even more space or see him receive the calibre of chances his potential teammate has been.

At the core of Newcastle's resurgence has been former Lyon maestro Guimaraes, and he could once again be integral in feeding the Nigerian marksman should Moffi make the move to Tyneside.
