Wolves' injury problems look set to get even worse as influential midfielder Matheus Nunes was forced off in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Brentford.

What's the word?

The Portuguese midfielder, who became Wolves' club-record signing during the summer when he joined from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth £38m, went down clutching his shoulder against the Bees.

After playing on for a few minutes, he went down again and was replaced by Joao Moutinho, with a spell on the sidelines now looking likely for the 24-year-old.

Bad news for Davis

Although Nunes is yet to show his best form for the Old Gold, with no goals and just one assist to his name in the Premier League so far this season, he has still been a regular for the club and has started every game since Steve Davis took over as interim manager. As a result, he will undoubtedly be gutted to see another player sidelined.

The former Crewe Alexandra boss is already being forced to cope without the likes of Pedro Neto, Raul Jimenez and Sasa Kalajdzic, so to lose another potential attacking output in Nunes will certainly not improve his mood.

With the Old Gold currently occupying a relegation spot in the Premier League, they need as many members of the squad available as possible as they look to stave off relegation, so having another player potentially out is a big blow to their chances of moving out of the bottom three before the World Cup next month.

Nunes may have struggled in the Premier League so far but there is no doubt that he is a top-quality player on his day, as he established himself as one of the top young talents during his time with Sporting Lisbon where he scored four and assisted five last term.

Former teammate Goncalo Santos sang his praises ahead of his exit from Sporting during the summer, saying:

“It's unbelievable when he has the ball at his feet. Nobody can catch him; it’s impossible because he's too fast.”

While Nunes' performances this season have been underwhelming, he is playing in a side extremely low on confidence, so hopefully, he is not injured for too long and can return quickly to play his part in turning Wolves' season around.
