An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers attacking midfielder Ryan Kent and his future at Ibrox ahead of the January transfer window...

What's the latest?

According to Football Insider, the Light Blues are opening contract talks with the Englishman as Ross Wilson attempts to pin the attacker down to an extension.

The report claims that the Gers want to secure his future at Ibrox as he has the potential to be a prize asset for the club, amid interest from Premier League side Fulham.

His current deal is due to expire at the end of the 2022/23 campaign and this means that he could sign a pre-contract with a foreign team from January onwards.

Hit the jackpot

Wilson could hit the jackpot at Rangers by agreeing a new contract with Kent and then cashing in on the gem by selling him to Fulham, or another interested side.

The forward is currently on course to leave on a free transfer at the end of the campaign and this would result in the Gers failing to recoup a penny for his services, which means that they would lose a key player and not receive funds to spend on a replacement.

Rangers rejected a £10m offer from Leeds United in 2020 and this offers an insight into the kind of fee the club could rake in for the playmaker if he is tied down to a long-term contract.

Journalist Andrew Dickson once described the magician as being "completely unplayable" and that sums Kent up when he is at his best. Last season, the Englishman racked up a whopping 19 assists in all competitions as he showcased the creative side to his game, which he has taken into the current campaign with six assists in 13 Premiership matches.

The winger has racked up 53 assists in 193 matches for Rangers in all competitions since arriving at Ibrox from Liverpool and his ability to create chances for others could be why he is attracting interest from the Premier League.

However, his finishing has left a lot to be desired since the start of last season. He scored one single strike in 22 appearances this term.

These contrasting statistics explain why he could be an attractive target for a Premier League side whilst also being a player worth cashing in on for Rangers.

He could provide consistent creativity for an English side whilst the Gers could use a cash injection to bring in a player who can contribute with both goals and assists, to add more balance to their attacking set up.

Therefore, Wilson could hit the jackpot at Rangers by pinning Kent to a new contract and then using the added value that would bring to persuade a team from south of the border to splash £10m, or more, on his services.
