Tottenham Hotspur are looking to strengthen their squad in many different areas over the next two transfer windows, with some positions targeted as a priority and some pencilled in for the summer.

What's the word?

Spurs have struggled at times this season, delivering inconsistent results and performances, whilst some players have been heavily criticised.

Therefore, it does seem as though the squad needs investment if they are to finish in the top four, and the club are targeting specific positions for the January transfer window.

Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, Gold outlined the priority positions Spurs are targeting in January and where they will look to further strengthen at the end of the season.

"From what I understand, the main objectives remain the same; right wing-back - especially if they can get some of the wing-backs they have out, one or two - and an attacker.

"For the summer, the main aims are a couple of centre-backs, left and right-sided; obviously, the right-sided [player] can play in the middle, or the left-sided could, I guess; a central midfielder and a long-term Hugo Lloris replacement.

"Of course, among those [summer targets], if any were to suddenly become available in this window and they thought, 'okay, let's move up that project slightly', then I'm sure they would look at it."

The right opportunity

Beyond the priority positions, if a central midfielder or a centre-back were to become available in January, Spurs could do themselves a massive favour by securing them now.

Reported targets Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij are both out of contract in the summer, but if they can agree a deal to bring them to the club in January - although they may have to pay more - one or both could be the difference between Champions League qualification and failure, making the opportunity too good to pass up.

A new goalkeeper looks almost certain to wait until the summer, as clubs are surely highly unlikely to let their No 1 leave midway through the season.

But at the very least, Gold's comments suggest Spurs have a plan of action heading into the summer, and their apparent flexibility shows that they perhaps are poised to spring a surprise if the chance arises.
