Newcastle United will host Leeds United at St James’ Park this afternoon and now a new update has emerged on a potential late injury boost for Eddie Howe ahead of the clash.

What’s the latest?

According to Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie, a late decision will be made on Callum Wilson’s inclusion in the team this afternoon.

Downie tweeted:

“Decision will be made on Callum Wilson after training today - whether he can play against Leeds tomorrow. The England striker trained yesterday after illness. Alexander Isak very close to a return, and should be involved in the next couple of weeks #NUFC”

It’d be great news for Newcastle

There is no doubt that the return of Callum Wilson will be warmly welcomed by the St James’ Park faithful and it’s great news for the Newcastle squad especially since Alexander Isak is currently unavailable for selection through injury.

The England star - who featured in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad in Qatar over the last month - has been in fine form in front of goal for the Magpies this season.

Over 11 Premier League appearances, the 30-year-old striker has scored six goals, registered two assists and created one big chance, as well as averaging 2.5 shots on goal and 2.4 duels won per game.

The Newcastle boss has lavished praise and highlighted the importance of Wilson to the team's success hailing the striker "hugely important" earlier this season:

"He’s a hugely important part of our team, a focal point. We rely not just on his goals but his movement, his work rate."

Indeed, Newcastle are in phenomenal form in the top flight this season continuing their dominance with another victory over Leicester City on Boxing Day and are currently third in the table with just one defeat tallied up over their first 16 outings.

Another three points tallied up today would keep the Magpies in contention to battle Manchester City and Arsenal, as well as help them to retain their Champions League qualifying spot inside the top four ahead of the new year.

With that being said, the return to action for Wilson will be a huge boost for Howe when Leeds make their visit to Tyneside this afternoon and will put them in a great position to continue to compete at the highest level in 2023.
