With a number of first-team players away at the World Cup in Qatar, new Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui will no doubt be keeping an eye on some of the youngsters still training at Molineux.

The Spanish manager will perhaps have taken the opportunity to watch the U21s in action on Tuesday night when they took on Manchester United in the first knockout round of the Papa John's Trophy.

After a 0-0 draw in normal time, Wolves' youngsters were defeated on penalties so exit the competition, but there were plenty of promising performances on show at Molineux.

One academy talent who is on the verge of breaking into the first team at Wolves is Chem Campbell, and after another strong attacking display, Lopetegui must consider handing him more minutes in the Premier League after the World Cup break.

As per SofaScore, the 19-year-old would contribute three key passes during the 90 minutes and register five shots, which shows how involved he was.

While he was only rated as a 6.4/10 by the website, the big chance he missed, along with his penalty miss in the shootout, contributed to that rating, as it was certainly a strong overall display in the 90 minutes.

The Welshman was deployed as a striker but was still heavily involved in the build-up play, completing 28/34 of his passes and succeeding with one dribble attempt during the game, while no player would contribute more key passes than Campbell.

The teenager is regularly showing that he is too good for youth football, as Express and Star journalist Liam Keen sang his praises in September.

He said: "Chem Campbell, wow. A sublime solo run almost results in a goal, but the goalkeeper tips it around the post. He's been slightly quieter this half but is clearly a cut above this level."

Considering Wolves' attacking woes so far this campaign, which sees them ranked as the lowest scorers in the top flight with just eight goals in 15 matches, it is clear that Lopetegui will have to try something different in attack when the Premier League resumes. That something different could well be Campbell earning his chance at senior level.
