Everton could land a hugely popular appointment in potentially replacing Frank Lampard with the Toffees legend Duncan Ferguson.

What's the latest?

There are suggestions Lampard is under serious pressure at Goodison Park after what has been another abysmal start to a Premier League campaign.

Now 18 games down, the Toffees find themselves well within the relegation scrap as they sit slumped in 18th spot and just three points above the bottom side, Southampton.

Coincidentally, that is exactly who Everton play on the weekend and a defeat against the Saints - who have just beaten Manchester City in the League Cup - would see Everton level on points with Southampton.

If that is how the game on Saturday pans out, there is a belief that Lampard could be relieved of his duties having joined the club less than a year ago.

However, if he is to be sacked on the weekend, journalist Pete O'Rourke has told Football FanCast that the potential appointment of Ferguson would be one that a lot of fans would welcome:

"It would be hugely popular. We know what a cult figure Duncan Ferguson is with the Everton faithful. He's had a couple of spells before in caretaker charge when he's done quite well and helped galvanize the team.

"And that's what Everton fans are seeking right now."

Familiar face

Ferguson is currently without a club having parted ways with Goodison Park back in July after a short stint as Lampard's second-in-command.

But he is no stranger to taking the reins at Everton having previously stepped in as caretaker manager on two occasions across the years.

His most recent spell only saw him take to the dugout for one game which came against Aston Villa at Goodison in which the Toffees lost 1-0.

And the previous occasion he took charge came back in the 2019/20 campaign where he did fair slightly better averaging just over a point per game.

The Scotsman managed to pick up a sensational 3-1 victory over Chelsea as well as draws against Manchester United and Arsenal in the league but tasted defeat to Leicester City in the League Cup.

So there have certainly been some signs that Ferguson could bring something to this Everton side, however, to appoint someone with no actual experience as a permanent manager would feel like a huge risk.

Lampard came into the job without a great deal of Premier League experience as a manager and that has seemingly shown through the Toffees' struggles of late.

But when a club like Everton is making manager changes so frequently, there have to be questions pointed at the board as to whether they are doing all they can to manage the club themselves.
