The January transfer window opens in less than two months and Glasgow Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson may dip into the market to bolster the squad at Ibrox heading into the second half of the season.

First-team manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst is facing pressure and is reportedly 'increasingly likely' to lose his job during the current break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but that does not mean that the club cannot explore potential signings.

Wilson can identify targets to come in and improve the team and shape the squad with a certain style in mind, allowing him to appoint a manager who suits the team rather than bringing someone in who wants the roster to undergo a complete overhaul.

One player who could come in during the January window as an upgrade on current first-team striker Kemar Roofe is Bristol City attacker Antoine Semenyo.

It has been reported this month that the Light Blues are preparing a £5m offer to snap the forward up at the start of 2023. His contract is up at the end of the season and it is stated that Bristol City are willing to cash in on him before they face losing him for nothing next summer.

He could be a better option for van Bronckhorst, or his potential replacement, than Roofe as he is a talented and young striker who has not proven himself to be unreliable.

The Gers forward has been a liability since arriving at Ibrox as he has consistently picked up injury issues that have stunted his progress in Scotland. He has been out with seven separate injury or illness problems since the start of 2020/21, missing a whopping 56 competitive matches in total.

Semenyo, who Nigel Pearson once dubbed a "nightmare" to play against, does not come with a huge risk from that perspective. He missed three months with a shin injury during the summer but has only missed five league matches this season - playing 16 of their 21 games - and has not suffered any other significant blows in his career.

The 22-year-old is also seven years younger than the ex-Anderlecht gem and, therefore, has far more time on his hands to improve and develop his game, with journalist Josh Bunting claiming that he has a "bright future".

He would offer far more than Roofe in the long term, due to his potential, but he could also provide more on the pitch in the immediate future.

In the 2021/22 campaign, the Ghana international plundered eight goals and 12 assists in 31 Championship appearances - a goal contribution every 1.55 matches. Meanwhile, the Rangers man produced ten goals and one assist in 21 Premiership outings, a contribution every 1.91 games.

These statistics, along with their respective injury record and ages, suggest that the Bristol City marksman would be an upgrade on Roofe in January, which is why Wilson must sign him.
