Julen Lopetegui is still yet to be confirmed as the new Wolves boss but if reports are to be believed it is only a matter of time until he is announced as Bruno Lage's successor at Molineux.

The former Real Madrid boss has a big job on his hands to turn around a shocking start to the season which sees Wolves occupy a relegation spot in the Premier League, with just six league goals to their name.

It seems as if the 56-year-old has already identified his first transfer target as he looks to amend the Old Gold's woes in front of goal, with reports from Spain claiming that he is keen on bringing Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz to Molineux.

The Dominican Republic featured under Lopetegui during the manager's spell at the Santiago Bernabeu, scoring once in eight appearances, although he was competing with Karim Benzema for a starting spot up front so was perhaps never going to be a regular.

Diaz has shown his goalscoring credentials with Real Madrid Castilla, for whom he has 32 goals in 43 appearances, while he also enjoyed an impressive spell at Lyon, where he hit 18 goals and five assists in just 37 appearances, which led Los Blancos to re-sign him for £23m just a year after letting him go for £7.5m.

It was no surprise, therefore, when former Lyon assistant manager Gerald Baticle sang his praises in 2017, saying:

“He’s a real goal scorer. When others might want to make a pass, his first idea is to find an angle to shoot towards goal. All his play is in the centre towards goal."

Considering Wolves' current predicament, a goalscorer in the ilk of Diaz could be exactly what Lopetegui needs to turn things around at Molineux, as the injuries to Raul Jimenez and Sasa Kalajdzic have left the Old Gold very light up front. Indeed, in their absence, only three players in the entire squad have found the net for the Midlands outfit.

The 29-year-old, who earns £125k-per-week at Real Madrid, could prove to be a bargain option too, as his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu is set to expire at the end of the season, so the Spanish giants may sell for a low price in January rather than losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

Therefore, Fosun should listen to Lopetegui's reported request as bringing Diaz to Molineux after the World Cup would be a masterclass from the manager if he can get Wolves firing again in the final third.
