Aston Villa have been mooted as a side that are potentially looking to bring in the Canadian striker Jonathan David this month as they look to replace Danny Ings.

What's the latest?

Unai Emery has already spoken on the thinking behind allowing Ings to depart for West Ham United this month with the player expected to complete his move imminently:

"We decided on one offer from West Ham. The player was wishing to get it and I decided to let him go because for him it was a very good offer and for the club as well," said Emery.

It is reported the striker will bring in around £15m to Villa Park to be spent this month as they look for a replacement to the 30-year-old.

And with less than two weeks remaining in the January window, insider Dean Jones has suggested David from Lille could be the Englishman's potential successor.

Indeed, speaking on the Ranks FC Patreon page, the transfer guru has claimed alongside Arnaut Danjuma, Villa have been mooting out some other options with one possibly being David:

"Someone texted me a minute ago and was talking about what might happen there. And I said surely it opens the door to Danjuma? And he said, yeah, but Danjuma has had two or three other offers within the Premier League already. He's also had two offers abroad I know one of them is PSV. So look out for that.

"Danjuma would be a reasonably good fit at Aston Villa. But what he said was they've also been sounding out a couple of other players he mooted one of them might be Jonathan David. So if they were going to replace Danny Ings with someone like that, then fair play like that would be big. So just one to look out for that I've had put to me."

Big upgrade?

It has to be said, Ings has done a reasonably good job at Villa Park when you consider he has returned six goals in his 18 league appearances with only eight of them being from the starting XI (via Transfermarkt).

To put that into context, that is the same number of goals that Callum Wilson has returned for Newcastle United in the Premier League this season.

Yet he appears to be on his way to the London Stadium and Emery is seemingly already scouting out his possible replacement.

And in David, Villa could be getting one of the sort-after strikers from across the continent with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool previously credited with an interest in the Canadian.

This season alone, in his 19 Ligue 1 appearances, David, who has a reported price tag of €50m (£44m), has provided a sensational return of 12 goals and four assists for Lille (via Transfermarkt).

Considering only Kylian Mbappe has outscored David in Ligue 1 and he has netted one more than Neymar - that's not bad going at all.

And this is no fluke, in the 23-year-old's other two campaigns in France, he has returned double-figure goal returns in both league campaigns and is showing a steady development having almost surpassed those records in half the number of games this season.

"He is a phenomenon. The best player in the country," his former manager, Hein Vanhaezebrouck, told Belgian media (via reports).

If this is a player who Villa potentially snap up. It will be intriguing to see how he may potentially partner with Ollie Watkins up top.
