Despite Wolverhampton Wanderers having a poor domestic season on and off the pitch, with woeful results and a managerial departure, there could be some cause for optimism when it comes to promising youth talent making their way through the academy ranks.

Indeed, Steve Davis could well save the club millions of pounds in the transfer market by unleashing a youngster who has tremendous potential - in the shape of 16-year-old Leon Chiwome.

Wolves signed the player from AFC Wimbledon in the summer and just last month he followed in the footsteps of previous Old Gold youngsters Owen Farmer and Chem Campbell by being named by The Guardian as one of the best talents in the Premier League.

Academy manager Jonathan Hunter-Barrett praised Chiwome, saying: “What we saw in him was an excellent profile for a centre-forward who is big, strong and quick.

“He’s very keen to learn and get on the ball, and he knows where the back of the net is.”

High praise for the highly regarded attacker and he has certainly made an impression in the youth teams at Molineux.

In five U18 Premier League matches this season, Chiwome has bagged twice - with these returns even seeing the starlet called up to the U21 level - appearing twice in the Premier League 2 while also playing twice in the Papa John's Trophy.

With Diego Costa and Hwang Hee-chan the only fit senior centre-forwards at the club, could this represent an opportunity for Davis and James Collins to unleash him at the highest level?

It might be too soon at this moment in time, but with his undoubted potential, there is no reason why he can't go on to make the grade at the first-team level and eventually save the club millions in transfer fees in the near future.
