Everton are reportedly seeking out a replacement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin this January...

What’s the latest?

That's according to the print edition of the Sunday People (via Goodison News), who claim that Frank Lampard is desperate to add some firepower to his squad and sees Duvan Zapata as the answer.

Given their ongoing financial struggles, the Toffees are seeking out an initial loan move with a view to purchasing him for £15m. Kevin Thelwell has entered into talks with the Italian outfit.

The Sunday People journalist Clive Hetherington adds context to the story, by relaying West Ham United's failed pursuit in the summer. Now, their rivals in the division could bolster their ranks with the very man they sought to sign last window.

Bye-bye DCL

Having endured a tough season with regard to fitness once more, Calvert-Lewin's usefulness at the Merseyside club is dwindling with each passing campaign.

The 25-year-old has only managed nine Premier League appearances thus far, scoring one goal, and the season prior he could only muster 17 appearances too.

It is a long time since Goodison Park has seen the striker fully fit and in his prime, with his last commendable campaign dating back to the 2020/21 season.

Then, he would score 21 goals across all competitions for a Carlo Ancelotti side that seemed to be making great progress.

Now, things are at an all-time low for Everton, who find themselves joint-bottom of the league and without a win since October.

Lampard is crying out for something fresh and new to reignite a tired campaign, and although Zapata has also struggled this season with injuries, he has proven a dependable goalscoring asset across his career in Italy.

The Colombia international has scored 80 times and assisted a further 40 in just 174 appearances for Atalanta, with his blistering speed and raw physicality proving too much for Serie A.

It is these qualities that suggest he would be a good fit for Lampard's side, who have relied heavily upon the often-absent Calvert-Lewin to lead the line with his domineering presence. Therefore, to see writer David Amoyal dub him a "monster" only serves to support the earlier claims.

The 31-year-old ranks in the top 14% of European forwards for aerials won, yet remains a strong box presence as he also sits in the top 2% for touches in the attacking penalty area.

It was only last season that he recorded 20 goal contributions, with there being no reason to suggest that a move to Goodison Park couldn't see him recapture this form.

They are in need of something vastly different, otherwise, this could finally be the season that sees them lose their illustrious record of having never been relegated.
