Growing older has done little to soften Roy Keane it seems, with the Republic of Ireland assistant manager remaining as outspoken as ever. Indeed, the former Manchester United captain has had his say on their current state, as well as that of bitter rivals Liverpool.
Speaking at a Show Racism the Red Card event (quotes sourced via the Sun), the 45-year-old has delivered rather a damning verdict on the battle the two most successful institutions of English football have on their hands to merely finish in the top four this season.
“When I see clubs like Liverpool and Man United celebrating getting into the top four, I cringe at it, I really do.”
“Any of these big clubs – do you think that Real Madrid and Barcelona would be celebrating getting fourth? Come on, get a grip. It is about getting your hands on a trophy.”
While the former Celtic midfielder is never likely to prove the most popular figure amongst Kopites around the world, perhaps it’s fair to say Keane has a point.
For United, too, having spent ridiculous sums of money over the course of the summer in an attempt to restore former glories, merely finishing in the top four is a far cry from the successes both clubs enjoyed not all that long ago.
With that in mind, here’s a look at how Liverpool fans reacted to Keane’s comments.
@LivEchoLFC Flawed argument IMO. You need Champions League to attract players. It's the first step to competing for silverware. So important.

@LivEchoLFC Does anyone genuinely care about what Roy Keane has to say? He's even less relevant than mourinho!

@LivEchoLFC He should be ashamed walking out on his country in a world cup.

See while Roy Keane is in theory right it wouldn't change the endless crying and bitching if we didn't make the top four #lfc
