Newcastle United supporters would have been excited when they saw that they were signing a full-back from Atletico Madrid back in July, but things haven’t exactly panned out as they might have expected with Jesus Gamez.
Before tonight, the right-back hadn’t featured in a Championship clash since the home defeat to Blackburn Rovers in November, when he was stretchered off with an injured collarbone.
The Spaniard did play in the FA Cup tie against Oxford in January – one that Toon fans will still be trying to forget – but he was finally given another league start in the clash against fellow automatic promotion hopefuls Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night.
With both Vurnon Anita and DeAndre Yedlin nursing knocks, the 31-year-old was handed his chance by manager Rafa Benitez.
Magpies supporters were quick to have their say on social media at the surprise inclusion, with many expressing their shock with the decision.

While many were shocked and surprised, others were keen to get behind the player on a rare start.
Massive chance for Gamez after the 2 right back injuries, I hope he takes it well
