Anthony Martial has been left out in the cold for Manchester United’s last two games.
The French striker was not included in the matchday squads for the 1-1 draw with Stoke City or the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Hull City that followed.
Manager Jose Mourinho has publicly suggested that Martial needs to prove that he deserves a starting spot following a difficult period for the player.
Off-field problems, such as the breakdown of his marriage, could be the reason behind the 21-year-old’s dip in form.
It is bold for Mourinho to snub Martial, but we have seen it before when he kept Henrikh Mkhitaryan out of the squad in the early stage of the season.
Now, though, the Armenian is a crucial member of the Red Devils’ first team, and perhaps Martial will eventually mirror his teammate.
On the other hand, a statistic from WhoScored.com suggests that Mourinho might be acting slightly hasty with his treatment of the attacker.

As the tweet shows, his goal production is impressive and only second to teammate Marcus Rashford since August 2015.
In the current campaign, Martial has scored just six goals in 20 appearances in all competitions, and he has started only nine out of a possible 22 top-flight matches.
Earlier this week, Mourinho extended an olive branch to the Frenchman by confirming to the media that the forward will start against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup at the weekend, and if he plays well, could feature in the following fixture against Hull.
