Alderweireld discusses Tottenham Hotspur future, fans react

Toby Alderweireld has become a central figure in Tottenham Hotspur’s defence alongside Jan Vertonghen, but the Belgian’s long-term future remains uncertain.

The 28-year-old has a contract at the North London outfit until 2019, so there is no immediate rush to pen fresh terms, but a number of his teammates have extended their deals in the past 10 months or so.

Alderweireld’s agent Stijn Francis caused quite a stir last month when he told Het Nieuwsblad that his client deserves a new contract or a transfer.

The London Evening Standard claimed that the defender wants to be given a similar salary that the likes of Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris have, with both believed to be the club’s highest earners on around £100,000 a week.

While on international duty with Belgium, Alderweireld was asked by Sky Sports News about his contract situation and he confirmed that talks have been held between himself and manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, the club are yet to put an offer on the table.

“I had a good conversation with the manager. I told him I’m focused on football, to keep my game up and help the team. That’s all I can do. You can see I’m happy there, and I try to help the team, and that’s the way I always play football.

“No [contract offer], like I said, I am focused on football. The rest, I don’t know, we will see about that.”

Tottenham fans have tweeted their thoughts on Alderweireld’s comments.
