Arsenal lifted the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday afternoon after beating Chelsea 4-1 on penalties, and Gunners fans were particularly impressed with the performance of midfielder Granit Xhaka.

The Switzerland international was named in the starting line-up alongside Mohamed Elneny in the middle of the park and despite Victor Moses’ goal for the Blues just after the half-time break, Xhaka was influential in the equaliser that set up the spot-kicks.

The 24-year-old swung in a free-kick that was headed home by summer arrival Sead Kolasinac, while he showed some great leadership in the middle of the park and saw a stunning 35-yard strike saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Arsene Wenger’s men won on penalties as Theo Walcott, Nacho Monreal, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud all scored while Courtois and Alvaro Morata missed the target for Antonio Conte’s side.

Arsenal supporters were quick to have their say on the showing of Xhaka via social media, and while some believe that he is a future captain, others were delighted to see him outclass former Gunner Cesc Fabregas in central midfield.
