To say Mesut Ozil is a divisive figure at Arsenal would be an understatement. Signed for a club-record £42.5m fee in the summer of 2013, Gunners fans thought their club had snapped up one of the finest footballers on the planet that would turn their nearly men into champions of England… but that hasn’t been the case.

The German has shown glimpses of his supreme talent, but a perceived lack of work rate has prevented him from becoming an Emirates Stadium favourite. Languid in his style of play, Ozil is often blamed for Arsenal’s failings and has even described been described as a “scapegoat” by his agent.

Today in his pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Crystal Palace on Monday manager Arsene Wenger addressed the bad feeling around the 28-year-old, sticking up for his player by claiming that he cares “much more than people think” about what’s said about him.

Naturally, fans reacted on Twitter with a sizable proportion taking the chance to have a pop at the ex-Real Madrid man…
