Aston Villa picked up their fourth consecutive Championship victory as they beat bottom-of-the-table Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Villa Park on Saturday, but Villa fans weren’t impressed with Glenn Whelan’s performance.
Steve Bruce’s men have recovered well from a disappointing start to the season and the 4-4-2 formation they have been playing since they beat Barnsley earlier this month came up trumps again against the Trotters.
Jonathan Kodjia’s penalty late in the first half proved to be the difference between the two sides, with the hosts’ Neil Taylor seeing red late on for a foul on Adam Le Fondre.
Whelan certainly hasn’t been a popular figure among the Villa Park faithful following his summer move from Stoke City, and Aston Villa supporters were quick to have their say on his showing via social media.
While some said that he was “a liability”, others feel that he is the “only player who hasn’t performed” during the upturn in the Midlands outfit’s form.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
?????? Glen don't take it as an endorsement! You were terrible. Except for the header off the line! ? By the way we play in claret and blue!

He's literally done nothing all game bar run around…. I could do the same and earn same wage

He does some things well other times he looks like a pub player. Needs to play the ball forward more

U know I think I'm the only one that don't like him actually ? it's an important role but watching closely don't think he actually did much

If Glenn Whelan played well then my bad. I didn't see his goal line clearance from my seat. But he always look a bit slow to me. #avfc

Another 3 points but Whelan again looked poor. Hoping this break now will see the return of Jedinak. Jeremy Simpson ✊️??? #AVFC #UTV

We make it so difficult for ourselves. Well, Whelan makes it so difficult for us. ? Better second half plez! #AVFC #UTV

Whelan is a liability #avfc

Whelan has been rubbish for us since signing. Only player who hasn't performed at all whilst we've been playing well recently #avfc
