Aston Villa fans slam Tommy Elphick after EFL Cup defeat

A much-changed Aston Villa lost 2-0 against Middlesbrough in the third round of the EFL Cup at Villa Park on Tuesday night, and Villa fans were not impressed with the performance of Tommy Elphick.

Steve Bruce decided to make 11 alterations to the team that picked up just their second Championship win of the campaign when they beat Barnsley 3-0 at Oakwell on Saturday, and Elphick made a rare appearance in the back four having fallen out of favour since the former Hull City manager took the reins last October.

The 30-year-old was also handed the captain’s armband against Boro as he looked to stake a claim for a regular spot in the side, but things took a turn for the worse when the defender gave away a penalty and was given a second yellow card, leaving his team with 10 men for the remaining 30 or so minutes.

Aston Villa supporters were quick to have their say on his showing via social media, and while some said he “should be ashamed”, others ‘don’t want to see him put a Villa shirt on again’.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
